Burgundy - Wine made in the Burgundy region in eastern France. The most famous wines produced here - those commonly referred to as Burgundies - are red wines made from Pinot Noir grapes or white wines made from Chardonnay grapes. Red and white wines are also made from other grape varieties, such as Gamay and Aligoté respectively. Small amounts of rosé and sparkling wine are also produced in the region. Chardonnay-dominated Chablis and Gamay-dominated Beaujolais are formally part of Burgundy wine region, but wines from those subregions are usually referred to by their own names rather than as "Burgundy wines". Burgundy has a higher number of appellations d'origine contrôlée (AOCs) than any other French region, and is often seen as the most terroir-conscious of the French wine regions. The various Burgundy AOCs are classified from carefully delineated Grand Cru vineyards down to more non-specific regional appellations. The practice of delineating vineyards by their terroir in Burgundy go back to Medieval times, when various monasteries played a key role in developing the Burgundy wine industry.

List of Burgundy Grand Crus - The origins of Burgundy's Grand crus can be found in the work of the Cistercians who, among their vast land holdings, were able to delineate and isolate plots of land that produced wine of distinct character. Following the French Revolution many of these vineyards were broken up and sold as smaller parcels to various owners. The partible inheritance scheme outlined in the Napoleonic code which specified that all inheritance must be equally divided among heirs further contributed to the parceling of Burgundies vineyards. This created situations such as the case of Clos Vougeot which was a single 125 acre run by the monks that today is parceled into plots owned by nearly 80 different owners, some of whom only own enough vines to make a case of wine per vintage. In accordance with Appellation d'origine contrôlée laws each of these owners are entitled to use of Grand Cru Clos de Vougeot on their label though the quality, price and reputation of this Grand cru wine can vary widely.

He features prominently in Jonathan Nossiter's critical film Mondovino as an agent of wine globalization.

Robert M. Parker, Jr. (born July 23, 1947) is a leading U.S. wine critic with an international influence. His wine ratings on a 100-point scale and his florid tasting notes, published in his newsletter The Wine Advocate, define modern American wine criticism and are a major factor in setting the prices for newly-released Bordeaux wines. Wines made specifically to earn high Parker points are often considered "Parkerized," in that such wines have a tendency to possess certain attributes that are said to be akin to Parker's own personal preferences, most notably heightened concentrations of fruit and higher levels of alcohol. Because of his influence and the change of certain "traditional" wine styles represented by Parkerized wines, Robert M. Parker is oftentimes the target of staunch criticism from those whose tastes and opinions are different from his own.
