The California Department of Parks and Recreation manages more than 270 park units, which contain the finest and most diverse collection of natural, cultural, and recreational resources to be found within California. California State Parks contains the largest and most diverse natural and cultural heritage holdings of any state agency in the nation. State park units include underwater preserves, reserves, and parks; redwood, rhododendron, and wildlife reserves; state beaches, recreation areas, wilderness areas, and reservoirs; state historic parks, historic homes, Spanish era adobe buildings, including museums, visitor centers, cultural reserves, and preserves; as well as lighthouses, ghost towns, waterslides, conference centers, and off-highway vehicle parks. These parks protect and preserve an unparalleled collection of culturally and environmentally sensitive structures and habitats, threatened plant and animal species, ancient Native American sites, historic structures and artifacts.

Conservatory of Flowers - Opened in 1879, the wood and glass greenhouse is the oldest existing conservatory in the Western Hemisphere and has attracted millions of visitors to Golden Gate Park since it first opened its doors. Immersive displays in five galleries include the lowland tropics, highland tropics, aquatic plants, potted plants and special exhibits. The Conservatory is one of only four public institutions in the United States to house a highland tropics exhibit. The Conservatory of Flowers is a spectacular living museum of rare and beautiful tropical plants under glass. From Borneo to Bolivia, the 1500 species of plants at the Conservatory represent unusual flora from more than 50 countries around the world. It houses an increasingly important collection of endangered plant species, including ferns, palms and aroids. It is also home to an unparalleled collection of high-altitude orchids -- more than 700 of the 1,000 known species. It is the largest and most comprehensive public collection in the world.
Crissy Field Center - Now housed in one of the nation's greenest park-based buildings, the Crissy Field Center is a model of sustainability for program participants and park visitors alike. The Center's facilities include a media lab, resource library, arts workshop, science lab, and gathering room which meet strict criteria for environmental, technological, and user performance and provide "healthy" environments to optimize learning. The facility is also home to the >Beach Hut snack bar which is furnished from top to bottom with reclaimed and recycled materials. The new site will serve not only as a hub of sustainability programming in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, but also as a convening spot and resource for local community organizations, visiting diplomats, politicians, and educational leaders on both national and international fronts.
Farallon Islands - A group of islands and rocks found in the Gulf of the Farallones, off the coast of mainland San Francisco, California. They lie 27 miles (43 km) outside the Golden Gate, 20 miles (32 km) south of Point Reyes. Also see the Farallon National Wildlife Refuge.

Sunday Streets San Francisco -
The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) presents the Sunday Streets program, with leadership support from the Mayor’s Office and logistical support from City departments.
Sunday Streets creates miles of car-free roads for people to get out and get active in diverse SF neighborhoods.
Urban Trails Program - The Recreation and Parks Department's Urban Trails Program is a two-part initiative to restore key trails and expand the current volunteer trail corps to help create and maintain a trail network in the city’s natural areas.
Because funding for trail improvements is limited, the Department has worked with community groups and stakeholders to focus spending on parks and open spaces that have the greatest needs and would provide the greatest benefits if improved. Parks currently slated for improvements are:
