On Sundays, the Elbo is home to Dub Mission, a theme night where some of the city's most knowledgeable selectors throw down vintage dub noises, often from the original seven-inch singles. On any given music night, you're going to pay a cover of maybe $3 to $7 to get upstairs, but it's always well spent. Some artists who cut their teeth at the Elbo? Galaxy Club - Located across the street from landmark-record- shop Amoeba Music, this recently remodeled and reopened watering hole is breathing new nightlife back into the Upper Haight. The Galaxy's sparse, understated décor and low, minimal lighting draws an eclectic set of revelers -- from full-on clubbers to passer-by curiousos -- and plays host to a wide array of weekly musical talent. Features a newly expanded live music performance room, physically separate from the main bar, that hosts 5-6 nights a week of local, national and international touring entertainment. Though it's free to get into the bar, a cover is typically charged at the entrance to the music room. Every Monday night, the Hemlock presents its Punk Rock Sideshow deejay event in the main bar and occasionally has deejays on other nights of the week.

La Peña Cultural Center - Berkeley. The Peña tradition started in Latin America in the early sixties. The mission of the Peña was to provide good food, music and an overall aesthetic response to an institutional culture that did not provide the space for other creative forms to exist. Its programming, since its founding in 1975, is a chronicle of the cultural, social and political struggles of our times, especially the efforts of the Latin American and Latino communities in the Bay Area and in the U.S.

Plough and the Stars, The - Irish pub. Pool and darts are available for the athletically inclined, and when the fog rolls through the Avenues, you might as well be in Ballybunion of a November's eve. Most important, the affable barkeeps know how to serve up an ebon Guinness with a creamy head at cellar temperature or even a Harp or a Magner's if you're so disposed. Also available are Bushmill's, Jameson, and Redbreast whiskey from the Old Sod for those especially somber, or congenial, evenings.

Supperclub - You enter supperclub san francisco through an understated door on Harrison street and are greeted by an outrageous hostess with leopard-painted eyes. After a drink in the cheekily swank Bar Rouge, the hostess takes you to your "bed." You find yourself lounging comfortably against pillows, sipping coolly from your favorite drink.
