Adamic, Louis - One of the best-known ethnic American authors of the twentieth century was born in 1898 in Slovenia. He immigrated to the United States in 1913, and worked at various jobs throughout the 1920s. By the end of that decade, his writings were getting more exposure; by 1930 he had placed eight pieces in Mencken’s "American Mercury." Adamic also began to publish books, such as "Dynamite" (1930), on labor violence in America; and "Laughing in the Jungle" (1932), an autobiography. His "The Native’s Return" (1934), about a trip he made back to Yugoslavia, won him wide acclaim. Adamic was active in publishing the periodical "Common Ground" which sought to integrate immigrant groups into American society without the chauvinism that traditionally accompanied this process. His publishing successes continued with "My America" (1938); "From Many Lands" (1940); "Two-Way Passage" (1942); "What’s Your Name?" (1942); "My Native Land" (1943); and "A Nation of Nations" (1945). Adamic’s politics, firmly on the left, were controversial. His membership during the 1930s and 1940s in a multitude of Popular Front organizations with known Communist membership and sympathies brought him under the surveillance of the FBI and other intelligence agencies.
Adventures of Tintin: Breaking Free - An anarchist parody of the popular Tintin series of comics. An exercise in detournement, the book was written under the pseudonym J. Daniels and published by Attack International in April of 1988 and then republished in 1999. The story features a number of characters based on those from the original series by Hergé, notably Tintin himself and Captain Haddock (referred to only as 'the Captain'), but not the original themes or plot. The story tracks Tintin's development from a disaffected, shoplifting youth to a revolutionary leader.

Bethune, Norman -
A Canadian physician and medical innovator. Bethune is best known for his service in war time medical units during the Spanish Civil War and with the Communist Eighth Route Army (Ba Lu Jun) during the Second Sino-Japanese War. He developed the first mobile blood-transfusion service in Spain in 1936. A Communist, he wrote that wars were motivated by profits, not principles. Caudwell, Christopher Archive - In 1934, Caudwell developed a special interest in Marxism, and in the summer of 1935 he wrote Illusion and Reality, a Marxist critique of poetry. After finishing the book he joined the Communist Party, and soon became a dedicated grassroots activist, still continuing his writing, even though none of his works were printed during his lifetime.

Whereas Marx's main contribution to economics was his analysis of the commodity relationship in Capital - capitalism rather than communism - Kropotkin assesses what would need to be done and how, in a communist society.

Draper, Hal (1914-1990) - Hal Draper, the son of immigrant garment workers, was born in 1914. He joined the Socialist Workers Party in 1932 and, as a supporter of Max Shachtman, helped establish the Workers Party. In 1949, the organization became known as the Independent Socialist League. Under Shachtman's leadership the party rejected the revolutionary path to socialism. Draper became disillusioned with Shachtman and formed the International Socialists. Foster, William Z. - William Zebulon Foster (February 25, 1881 - September 1, 1961), born in Taunton, Massachusetts, was the long-time General Secretary of the Communist Party USA and trade union leader. He passed through the Socialist Party of America and the Industrial Workers of the World, as well as leading the drive to organize the packinghouse industry during World War I and leading the steel strike of 1919 before joining the Communist Party in 1921. While he continued to focus on the Party's work within organized labor, he largely subordinated his own political views to the policies declared by the Comintern throughout his years in and out of leadership of the Party.

Jaures, Jean - Born Sept. 3, 1859, Castres, France - died July 31, 1914, Paris. French Socialist leader and historian. A brilliant student and teacher, he entered the chamber of deputies in 1885 and subsequently became a Socialist. In his Socialist journals, notably Humanité, he denounced nationalism and upheld socialism and world peace. Jaurès saw socialism as the economic equivalent of political democracy; he believed that economic equality would come as the result of peaceful revolution. He sought to reconcile Marxian materialism and his own idealistic beliefs and emphasized the importance of individual rights and initiative. As leader of the Socialists, he opposed Boulanger, defended Dreyfus, and worked for the separation of church and state. He was active in the formation (1905) of the unified French Socialist party, and he attempted to preserve party harmony. In 1914, Jaurès advocated arbitration instead of war and declared that capitalist nations, including France, were responsible for the war crisis. He was assassinated by a fanatical patriot in July, 1914. His Histoire socialiste de la Révolution française (new ed. by Albert Mathiez, 8 vol., 1922-24), an economic interpretation of the French Revolution, strikes a balance between the materialistic approach of Marx and the dramatic history of Michelet.

Kollontai, Alexandra Archive - Russian Social-Democrat from 1890s, active in international socialist women's movement, and a member of the Mensheviks before 1914. Elected to Central Committee in 1917 and Commissar for Social Welfare in the Soviet government. With Bukharin in 'Left Communist' faction, opposed signing of Brest-Litovsk Peace [Lenin was for signing immediately, Trotsky for delaying in hope of a revolution in Germany, the Workers Opposition advocated a revolutionary war against Germany]. Kollontai was a leader of the WO. Sent to diplomatic posts in Mexico and Scandanavia. Sympathised with the Left Opposition, but subsequently 'conformed'.
Kropotkin, Pyotr Alexeyevich - One of the world's foremost anarcho-communists. Kropotkin advocated a communist society free from central government and based on voluntary associations between workers.

Marx, Myth & Legends - The distortion and questionable interpretation of Marx's work is in many senses a direct result of his great success. Myers, Gustav (1872-1942) - American historian, b. Trenton, N.J. He worked on a number of newspapers and magazines in New York City, joined the Populist party and the Social Reform Club, and was a member (1907–12) of the Socialist party. Such books as The History of Tammany Hall (1901, rev. ed. 1917), History of the Great American Fortunes (3 vol., 1910, rev. ed. 1936), and History of the Supreme Court of the United States (1912) were detailed, realistic exposés through which Myers made his reputation in the muckraking era of American literature.
National Democratic Front of the Philippines (NDFP) -
A coalition of left leaning political parties, agricultural unions, trade unions, and other related groups in the Philippines. The front has controversial members, like the Communist Party of the Philippines, which has its own military wing, the New People's Army. The Communist Party of the Philippines calls its participation in the NDF the National United Front Commission.
Naxalite-Maoist Insurgency (Wikipedia) - An ongoing conflict between Maoist groups, known as Naxalites or Naxals, and the Indian government.
The word Naxal, Naxalite or Naksalvadi is a generic term used to refer to various militant Communist groups operating in different parts of India under different organizational envelopes. In the eastern states of the mainland India (Jharkhand, West Bengal and Orissa), they are usually known as, or refer to themselves as Maoists while in southern states like Andhra Pradesh they are known under other titles.

Pacific Northwest Labor and Civil Rights Projects -
Gateway to a set of labor and civil rights history projects directed by Professor James N. Gregory at the University of Washington and supported by the Harry Bridges Center for Labor Studies, the Simpson Center for the Humanities, and the Center for the Study of Pacific Northwest. These eleven projects bring together nearly one hundred video oral history interviews and several thousand photographs, documents, and digitized newspaper articles. Included are films, slide shows, and lesson plans for teachers. The projects also feature dozens of historical essays about important issues, events, and people, many written by undergraduate and graduate students at the University of Washington.
Panhellenic Socialist Movement (PASOK) - A Greek centre-left political party. In 1981 PASOK formed the first socialist government in Greece's history, and subsequently ruled the country for most of the 1980s, 1990s and early 2000s. PASOK has served as the main opposition party since the general election of 2004. It is a member of the Party of European Socialists and the Socialist International. In the European Parliament it has 8 out of 24 Greek MEPs. On 31 January 2006, the party's president, George Papandreou, was elected President of the Socialist International, the worldwide organisation of social democratic, socialist and labour parties.
Papers of Lament Harris (University of Iowa) - Lement Harris was born in 1904 to Gertrude Upham and John Francis Harris. John Harris was the co-founder of Texaco and the Wall Street brokerage firm of Harris, Winthrop, and Co. Lement was educated in exclusive eastern prep schools and graduated from Harvard in 1926. Not having decided upon a career, he went to work on a farm in Pennsylvania where he was to remain for three years. While working as a farm laborer he read and was influenced by the works of Gandhi and Tolstoi. He was also exposed to a fellow worker who had been a member of a trade union delegation to the Soviet Union. Harris decided that he too must go there to see how the "new society" was working. He was introduced to Harold Ware, a communist and IWW organizer, who was running a farm in the North Caucasus area. Ware promised him employment when he came to the Soviet Union. His time in Russia was life-altering and he returned to the United States convinced that the Soviet system was in all ways superior to the West. Back home, he and Ware conducted a nine month survey of life in rural America. They published their results in The American Farmer. It was after this tour that Harris officially joined the Communist Party, of which he was a member until his death in September of 2002.

The Library's collection, which does not circulate, grew out of the forty-year accumulated and organized holdings of James Robertson, both correspondence and printed materials. The collection now includes over 6,000 books and periodical volumes, 100 reels of microfilmed documents and periodicals, and 175 linear feet of archival documents and bulletins. Particular emphasis is on minutes of leading committees and internal discussion material. Approximately three-quarters of the holdings are in English. There are significant materials in Russian: over 300 titles covering much of the record of the Bolshevik Party in the form of stenographic records of Congresses and Conferences, early Cheka reports, memoirs, and publications and exile correspondence of the Left Opposition. Holdings in German, French, Spanish, Polish, and other languages are also significant. Books and pamphlets are catalogued in a card file with 120 subject headings; periodicals are indexed separately. An extensively cross-referenced, computerized version of the card file and document holdings facilitates research.

Reading Marx's Capital with David Harvey - David Harvey has been teaching Karl Marx’s Capital, Volume I for nearly 40 years, and his lectures are now available online for the first time. This open course consists of 13 two-hour video lectures of Professor Harvey’s close chapter by chapter reading of Capital, Volume I. The text for this course is Capital, Volume 1: A Critique of Political Economy by Karl Marx. The Rosa Luxemburg Foundation is actively involved in political education throughout the Federal Republic of Germany. It considers itself part of the political movement for democratic socialism.
Serge, Victor Internet Archive - Victor Lvovich Khibalchich (better known as Victor Serge) was born in Brussels, the son of Russian Narodnik exiles. Originally an anarchist, he joined the Russian Communist Party on arriving in Petrograd in February 1919 and worked for the newly founded Communist International as a journalist, editor and translator. As a Comintern representative in Germany he helped prepare the aborted insurrection in the autumn of 1923. In 1923 he also joined the Left Opposition. He was expelled from the party in 1928 and briefly imprisoned. At this time he turned to writing fiction, which was published mainly in France. In 1933 he was arrested and exiled. After an international campaign he was eventually deported from Russia in April 1936 on the eve of the Moscow Show Trials. Upon arrival in the West he renewed contact with Trotsky but political differences developed and a bitter controversy developed between the two remaining veterans of the pre-Stalinist Russian Communist Party. Escaping from Paris in 1940 just ahead of the invading Nazi troops he found refuge in Mexico. During his last years Serge lived in isolation and died penniless shortly after the 30th anniversary of the Bolshevik revolution in November 1947.

Socialist Equality Party (Australia Section) - The Australian section of the International Committee of the Fourth International (ICFI), the world party of socialist revolution. Socialist Register - The Socialist Register was founded by Ralph Miliband and John Saville in 1964 as "an annual survey of movements and ideas" from the standpoint of the independent new left. It is currently edited by Leo Panitch, Greg Albo and Vivek Chibber, assisted by an editorial collective of eminent scholars in Africa, Asia, Europe and the Americas. Each volume is focused on a topical theme and characterized by the inclusion of relatively long, sustained analyses which cut across intellectual disciplines and geographical boundaries.

Solidarnosc: Acid Test for Trotskyists - In the decisive confrontation of December 1981 between the Polish Stalinist regime and Solidarnosc, the international Spartacist tendency (iSt) was virtually alone among ostensible Trotskyist organizations in siding with Jaruzelski and the Polish government. The rest - from the United Secretariat of Ernest Mandel to the International Committee of Gerry Healy, to the Socialist Workers Party headed by Jack Barnes - lined up, with varying degrees of enthusiasm, behind Lech Walesa and Solidarnosc.
Strachey, John -
British Socialist writer and Labour politician known for his contributions to leftist thought and for his peacetime rationing policies as British food minister. A creative and erudite interpreter of Marxist thought, Strachey published a number of works, including The Coming Struggle for Power (1932), The Nature of Capitalist Crisis (1935), The Theory and Practice of Socialism (1936), and What Are We To Do? (1938)—all works of his Communist period; then his moderately leftist A Programme for Progress (1940), Contemporary Capitalism (1956), The End of Empire (1959), and On the Prevention of War (1962), which offered proposals for dealing with tensions between the West and the Soviet Union.

Tamiment Library and Robert F. Wager Labor Archives (New York University) - Forms a unique, internationally-known center for scholarly research on Labor and the Left. The primary focus is the complex relationship between trade unionism and progressive politics and how this evolved over time. Archival, print, photograph, film, and oral history collections describe the history of the labor movement and how it related to the broader struggle for economic, social, and political change. Tamiment has one of the finest research collections in the country documenting the history of radical politics: socialism, communism, anarchism, utopian experiments, the cultural left, the New Left, and the struggle for civil rights and civil liberties. It is the repository for the Archives of Irish America, the Abraham Lincoln Brigade Archives, and a growing Asian American labor collection.
Tony Cliff (marxists.org) - In the late 1940s he developed the theory that Russia wasn't a workers' state but a form of bureaucratic state capitalism, a theory which has characterised the tendency with which he was associated for the remaining five decades of his life. Although he broke from "orthodox Trotskyism" after being bureaucratically excluded from the Fourth International in 1950, he always considered himself to be a Trotskyist although he was also open to other influences within the Marxist tradition. Tony Cliff (Wikipedia) - In the late 1930s and early 1940s he used several pseudonyms in three languages due to the illegal status of the Revolutionary Communist League in which he worked. Due to his lack of established residency rights in Britain in the early 1950s and during his brief exile in Ireland the name Roger or Roger Tennant would be used. Much later in the 1960s Cliff would revive many of his earlier pseudonyms in the pages of International Socialism in which journal reviews are to be found by Roger, Roger Tennant, Sakhry, Lee Rock and Tony Cliff, but none by Yigael or Yg'al Gluckstein. In 1950 he helped launch the Socialist Review Group which was based around a journal of the same name. This was to be the main publication for which he wrote during the 1950s, until it was superseded by International Socialism in 1960, eventually ceasing publication altogether in 1962. The group was renamed the International Socialists at the same time and was to grow from less than 100 members in 1960 until it claimed in the region of 3,000 in 1977, at which point it was renamed the Socialist Workers Party. Cliff's biography is, as he himself remarked, inseparable from that of the groups he was a member of.

Wolff, Richard - An American economist, well-known for his work on Marxian economics, economic methodology and class analysis.
He frequently collaborates with fellow economist Stephen Resnick.
In 1989, Wolff joined efforts with a group of colleagues, ex- and then current students to launch Rethinking Marxism, an academic journal that aims to create a platform for rethinking and developing Marxian concepts and theories within economics as well as other fields of social inquiry. He continues to serve as a member of both the editorial and the advisory boards of the journal.
