Longshore and Harbor Workers'Compensation Act - U.S. Code Title 33 Navigation and Navigable Waters, Chapter 18 provides compensation and medical care to employees disabled from injuries that occur on the navigable waters of the United States or in adjoining areas used in loading, unloading, repairing or building a vessel. Survivor benefits also are provided if the work-related injury causes the employee's death.

Office of Administrative Law Judges - Administrative Law Judges (ALJs) for the Federal Labor Relations Authority are appointed under section 7105(d) of the statute. The judges perform a variety of functions related primarily to conducting hearings and rendering recommended decisions in cases involving alleged unfair labor practices. In addition, Part 2430 of the Authority's regulations require that judges render decisions involving applications for attorney fees filed under the Back Pay Act and the Equal Access to Justice Act.

Society of Maritime Arbitrators, Inc. (SMA) - In order to assist the maritime industry in the resolution of disputes and in the selection of qualified arbitrators, the SMA publishes a roster of its approximately 130 members. The roster contains a brief description of the general background and expertise of each member. Members of the SMA are commercial people, recognized as leaders in their respective sectors of the industry, who have held a responsible commercial position for at least ten years. Members are surveyors, engineers, brokers, stevedores, shipbuilders, insurers, terminal operators, vessel operators, claims managers, agents, vessel owners, P and I Club representatives and chartering managers. The roster enables disputants to identify arbitrators who have received training in the mechanics of arbitration, and can assist in the selection of panels particularly suited to decide a dispute in an area requiring specialized knowledge or expertise.

U.S. Maritime Administration (MARAD) - Promotes the development and maintenance of an adequate, well-balanced, U.S. merchant marine, sufficient to carry the nation's domestic waterborne commerce and a substantial portion of its waterborne foreign commerce, and capable of serving as a naval and military auxiliary in time of war or national emergency. MARAD also seeks to ensure that the U.S. enjoys adequate shipbuilding and repair service, efficient ports, effective intermodal water and land transportation systems, and reserve shipping capacity in time of national emergency.
U.S. National Transportation Safety Board - Federal agency charged by Congress with investigating every civil aviation accident in the United States and significant accidents in the other modes of transportation -- railroad, highway, marine and pipeline -- and issuing safety recommendations aimed at preventing future accidents.
University of San Francisco Maritime Law Journal -
