Marine Protected Areas (MPA) of the United States - MPAs are defined areas where natural and/or cultural resources are given greater protection than the surrounding waters. In the U.S., MPAs span a range of habitats including the open ocean, coastal areas, inter-tidal zones, estuaries, and the Great Lakes. They also vary widely in purpose, legal authorities, agencies, management approaches, level of protection, and restrictions on human uses.

Since its formation in the late 1990s, The Ocean Project has grown from a handful of founding North American aquariums and conservation organizations into the world's most extensive network for advancing ocean education and action, with nearly 1,000 Partner zoos, aquariums, and museums (ZAMs), plus conservation and education organizations, agencies, and institutions in all 50 U.S. states and 85 countries.
